Is constant aperture really that important for still shooting?

Is constant aperture really that important for still shooting? I wanted to buy a nice used lens to replace my kit lens on my 600d. I do often find myself in low light situations, so I often have to use the flash to assist a little or switch to a 50 1.8 prime. I have one of those 18-55 f3.5-5.6 full plastic lenses, so any of the lens options would be better than it. Here are the ones I found: Canon EF-S 17-5…

I’m still learning and I don’t know how to chose lenses. Should I only look at aperture and focal length ? What can be the differences between two 50mm f/2 lenses ? Silly question about aperture, light meters and Sunny16 with a new fisheye lens?

Silly question about aperture, light meters and Sunny16 with a new fisheye lens? Just want to be sure of this before I blow a whole roll of film only to find out I made a silly mistake: Been doing film photography for a few months now and I’ve gotten to the point I feel quite comfortable exposing any given shot just based off experience, sunny16 and the light meter. As a result my pictures are becoming consistently pretty we…

Question about bokeh, why is it only noticeable when zoomed in and in a wider aperture?

Question about bokeh, why is it only noticeable when zoomed in and in a wider aperture? So yeah I have an old camera and it is my first camera. I only picked up this hobby recently. Question in I get a pronounced bokeh only when I stood far from my subject(I do this when my subject is a person) and with the camera zoomed in and having a f4 and above. The photo above I usually get that bokeh at 135. But I get bokeh usually in a norm…

How Does Aperture Affect Depth of Field in Distant Landscape Photography ?

How Does Aperture Affect Depth of Field in Distant Landscape Photography ? I have a question about the depth of field when photographing distant subjects like mountains with a 200mm focal length lens. From my understanding, when zooming in on faraway objects, the choice of aperture doesn’t significantly change the depth of field. For instance, is there a noticeable difference in depth of field between using f/5.6 and f…

How do you decide what EXACT aperture to use?

How do you decide what EXACT aperture to use? I understand this is probably a very basic question, but for some reason I’ve struggled understanding this. I’ve often heard people say, if you want the whole scene in focus, use f8 or above. Why would I go above then if f8 works? And there are several stops above f8 all the way to f22 — how would I know exactly which stop would keep my entire …

Prime vs Zoom: How to choose between them at the same aperture?

Prime vs Zoom: How to choose between them at the same aperture? I’m looking at the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 vs the Sigma 24mm 1.4. The aperture isn’t quite the same but it’s close and serves my purpose at 1.8 as well. Would a fixed focal length have any benefits over the 18-35 which is a lot more versatile? It’s going to be a big dent in my pocket so I want to be sure. I have the 11-20mm 2.8 Tokina lens as well whi…

Gaps in focal length across 3 lenses and minimum aperture?

Gaps in focal length across 3 lenses and minimum aperture? I currently have a Sigma 24-70 2.8 that isn’t quite as sharp as I would like it to be. I have a 50 1.8 and a 70-200 2.8 as well. I’m considering getting a 17-40 f4 to replace the 24-70. Am I likely to miss the 40-49 and 51-69 gaps in focal length? Also, how much will I hate a minimum aperture of f4 after shooting with faster glass for years? I’m…

Hard to tell DOF via EVF and display. When will I learn how to choose the right aperture?

Hard to tell DOF via EVF and display. When will I learn how to choose the right aperture? I really like the bokeh of lower apertures but I often got pictures which lack DOF so part of a plant or tree was out of focus. The preview display or EVF are too small to tell from standard perspective. Obviously zoom helps. Any tips on how I can improve my ability to predict the right aperture? Thank you! submitted by /u/jachjach

Will a TC affect the aperture?

Will a TC affect the aperture? So I have a Canon R10 and I don’t have the funds to buy RF lenses so I shop for EF lenses. I already know that the R10 will apply a 1.6x factor to the focal length. I’m looking into saving up and buying a 400 or 500mm lens for wildlife. So question #1 is, If I put the Canon 400mm f/4 on my Canon R10 will it be a 640mm f/4 or 640mm f/6.4? Questio…

I currently have a Canon R6 Mark II with the 24-105 F4-7.1 kit lens. Just for fun, I rented an 85 mm F1.2 for a few days.
