Why my 17-50mm Zoom Lense so Much longer than 50mm Prime? Hi I just got my first real camera an old Nikon DSLR. It came with a fungus'ed zoom lense (Tamaron 17-50mm). It is 82mm long at 17mm focal-length, and 110mm long at 50mm focal-length. I ordered a prime lense from Nikon (AF 50mm F1.8D). According to spec, it is only 39mm long.
