Why is some lens’ glass bigger than others?

Why is some lens’ glass bigger than others? I understand there’s an obvious answer but can’t wrap my head around it, just as the title says - not talking about housing, purely the glass frontal element. How can a tiny lens like an iPhone or point and shoot be the same focal length as a huge wide traditional lens? How can they let in the same amount of light when one is way bigger?
