How were extremely large (I mean large poster to billboard sized) prints made before digital? If you had a photo you wanted on the side of a building, how would you take 35mm film and blow it up that big?

I understand how photographic paper and an enlarger works, but you can really make a sheet of photographic paper that big and use a really big projector of some kind to make an impression.
