What can be done about a check given to us by a third party to pay off a car and sent to a bank who cashed it but claims they did not receive it? My girlfriend sold her broke down car to a mechanic who gave us a check to pay off the remaining amount she owed on the car. The bank gave her incomplete instructions on how to send the check; they told her to have the mechanic make the check payable to them and to send it through UPS. As such, she sent it without including her bank account info...
