YNAB… Help? Has anyone used this to good effect?

YNAB... Help? Has anyone used this to good effect? I downloaded YNAB (you need a budget), signed up for the free trial, and then forgot about it so now I'm signed up for a year. (Probably just underscores how much I need help monitoring my spending.) So far it isn't super clear to me how to get meaningful utility from this. The UX feels too manual and open-ended. e.g. unlike a Mint or something ...
