Using travel insurance to claim last minute bookings?

Using travel insurance to claim last minute bookings? Has anyone used submitted a claim to their travel insurance to cover last minute bookings? If so, what proof did you need? Last week we flew from Australia to London. After 24+ hours of travelling we got to the apartment we booked only to be told that they didn't receive our booking and the apartment wasn't available.
