When I went backpacking around Europe, the UK, and Ireland ~20 years ago, I had a standard guidebook and a 'Weird Europe' guidebook that I felt helped me find some balance between touristy and more 'specialized interest' destinations that at least gave me something to discuss with the locals in various hubs, if nothing else.
